FAQ

I currently run 2-day Weekend Throwing, Hand Building and Glazing Workshops; 5 Day Summer Courses; Evening Studio Pottery Classes

For fees and further details please refer to Course Dates and Booking Information and Conditions.

Can I book a course for a friend as a gift?

Yes, you can book for any of the courses including 1-to-1 as a gift for a friend or family member or you may wish to have a go with a friend or family member. Please be sure to check for availability or you may wish to book in advance and then after presenting the gift, ask them to email to arrange a suitable start/session date.

Do you provide gift vouchers?

Sorry, no, but you are welcome to ask for proof of receipt via email that you can print to insert into a card.

Do you provide private tutoring?

Yes, I provide 1-to-1 tuition at a rate of £50.00 per hour weekday and Saturdays and I cover specifically what you require.

Is the 1-to-1 available for children?

Yes, anyone from a reasonable age i.e. from aged 5+ can be booked on a 1-to-1 or 1-to-2.

There are two of us and we would like to have a go at pottery but we are only available at the weekend?

This would be at a rate of the 1-to-2 at £65.00 per hour (£32.50 each) on Saturday/weekday/evening or £75.00 per hour (£37.50 each) on Sunday or Bank Holiday

What can I make in an hour?

This would depend on the individual and the stage that you are at or whether you simply wish to just have the exciting experience. For those who want to learn all the steps in throwing or hand building the 1-to-1 will match the courses covered in the studio pottery, weekend throwing or hand building workshops. Alternatively, adults may wish to consider the weekend workshops attending only 1, 2 or 3 days. For those who wish to only have a go for a birthday or just for fun then the clay will be prepared for you to spend an hour on the wheel or hand build a pot of your choosing.

What is your availability for a 1-to-1 session?

This would depend on what is already booked. The best place to start is to eliminate the advertised weekend workshops and evening classes then email me a list of dates in order of preference.

How much would it cost for a group of people?

This would depend on the group. For the adult pottery party the cost is £24.00 per hour with a minimum of 4 (£95.00 per hour between 4 persons). For a party of children (min 6) the cost is £26.00 per child for 1.5 hours. For an adult to join this party the cost is £36.00.

Is throwing and hand building available for the pottery parties?

This would depend on the number of hours chosen. For 1.5 hours it is not possible to fit in both; you will only have time to do either throwing or hand building. For 2 hours you may be able to hand build a pot and then have a quick go on the wheel.

How much does it cost for 2-3 hours?

This will depend on what you choose. For 2 hours for 2 people the cost is £130 (3 hours at £195), for 3 adults the cost for 2 hours is £160 (3 hours at £240).

What is covered in a day session?

This would depend on the group and the number of people. Both hand building and throwing should be available as there is plenty of time to do both in a day.

What are the dates available?

This will depend on the workshop. For the weekend and summer workshops please refer to course dates. The studio pottery courses are roll on roll off so you decide when to start but please do check via email for date availability for throwing or hand building. For parties they can be run at weekends and school holidays provided I am able to match given dates. It may be best to check the specific date by email with at least a months notice or emailing a list of dates in order of preference.

It's my birthday and I want to do something creative. There will be a (x) number of us.
How much will it cost?

This will depend on the number of people and the hours required. Rates vary from 1-to-2 at £65 - £75 per hour to 3 adults at £80 - £90 per hour.

We would love to do a one day family workshop, when are they run and how far in advance do we need to book?

They can be run at weekends (outside of the advertised weekend workshops) and school holidays provided I am able to match given dates. It may be best to check the specific date by email with at least a months notice or emailing a list of dates in order of preference.

Can I/we only attend for one day of a weekend workshop?

Yes, as long as you are happy with the making process only, thrown pots will be too wet for turning. We can discuss your options for finishing on the day i.e. fire as is.

Over the 2 day workshop, will we also have a chance to glaze the pots we make?

No, for beginners the first day will be taken up with clay preparation, centring, pulling up, and making forms such as mugs, jugs, lids, bowls and plates. The second day will include turning and finishing, adding handles, decoration and slips. To optionally finish your pots you may wish to return for an evening class or attend the next weekend workshop for a few hours to glaze at an extra cost of the session, glaze and glaze firing. You may wish to collect and finish the pieces in your own studio or at a place where you may be already attending for evening classes. For intermediates and advanced, the course will build upon your existing skills or you may wish to specifically require assistance for a particular project.

Are the materials included?

This would depend on the course. Pottery/birthday parties are all inclusive, Adult's Summer and Weekend Workshops have some materials included and the Studio Pottery do not; but the suggested amount is added at the start of the term/session. The 1-to-1 and 1-to-2 do not include materials.

When do the evening classes run?

They currently run on Monday to Wednesday 7-9pm. As there is a waiting list for the throwing on the Studio Pottery Workshops a ten week Beginners Throwing Course will run on Thursday 7-9pm for those who are keen in making a start on learning the basic skills and depending on interest may also run on another day.

When do I start or when does the ten sessions start for the Studio Pottery?

The Studio Pottery Workshops are roll on roll off so you decide but please do check via email for date availability for throwing or hand building and for more information regarding absences and holidays.

The Beginners Throwing Course will run for ten weeks three times a year starting in September, January and after Easter.

Do students have to attend the same evening every week?

No, students can attend on any evening space permitting only for the Studio Pottery Workshops.

For the Beginners Throwing Course all sessions must be taken within the given day.

Can I skip a class?

Yes, only for the Studio Pottery Workshops, provided notice is given, a week is preferable so that the space can be filled by anyone wishing to have a go/ trying out/ on Standby/ waiting list. More details provided upon enquiry or booking.

For the Beginners Throwing Course all sessions must be taken within the given dates regardless of late arrival or non-attendance.

Are the courses suitable for beginners?

Yes, all the courses, workshops and parties are suitable for complete beginners.

Are the workshops accessible or is there a need to discuss in advance for some reasonable adjustments to be made?

It would be best to discuss any access arrangements.

Do you provide a kiln hire service?

Lewisham Arthouse provides a kiln hire service for the hire of both their kilns. However, if you do not have a full kiln load then I am able to accommodate a share in my own firings at a fraction of the kiln hire cost. My frequent firings are between 1040 and 1060, plus 1230 and 1150 occasionally.

I only have one piece that I want to fire, how much would this cost?

This would cost £3.00 per lb weight of the piece to be fired.

I have made a piece that has already been bisque fired and would require a glaze and a glaze firing; is this possible?

Yes, the cost for this would be £6.00 per lb weight of the piece to be fired; £3.00 per lb for the glaze plus £3.00 per lb for the firing.

I would like to glaze my own pots and need access to a space for glazing, would I be able to use your studio and your glaze?

Yes, the minimum cost for that is £10 or £15 per hour or come along during an evening session of £26. The cost for the glaze is £3.00 per lb plus £3.00 per lb for the firing if part share or full cost of kiln is not required.

What if I am need of technical advice or assistance?
Technician advice or assistance would be at the 1-to-1 rate or come along during an evening session of £26.
